Four reasons to offer language classes to your residents
1. Encourage traveling
Baby boomers spend about $157 billion per year on travel [1]. Offering language courses is a great way to support your residents’ travel aspirations. Knowing a foreign language will allow them to connect more deeply with the people they meet abroad than if they rely on them to speak English.
2. Help your residents reconnect with their heritage
Baby boomers are the bread and butter of the genealogy industry. Many Americans are looking to language to reconnect with their roots meaningfully. Learning the language of their grandparents offers a unique insight into their heritage.
3. Offer an intellectually stimulating activity
Baby boomers are more educated than any generation before them. As they retire, many want to be involved in meaningful activities and continue learning. A language class is a unique and exciting way to offer the kind of learning residents are looking for.
Now that the pandemic has acquainted them with videoconferencing platforms, they are eager to utilize their newly acquired tech skills and take an online class.
4. Promote cognitive and intellectual health
Research shows that learning a new language is one of the few activities that truly helps improve working memory. Language learning helps create new connections, improves attention span, and helps prevent cognitive decline.
Offering online activities ensures that the community can continue to thrive, even during lockdowns or a bad flu season.
