The Story Behind ICLS Online English Classes

Last week, a group of English students from the International Center for Language Studies (ICLS) visited Planet Word, a museum in downtown Washington, D.C. dedicated to the power and joy of language. ICLS teacher Allison—known for her dynamic and creative lessons—guided them through exhibits that brought words to life. Students often describe our classes as some of the most engaging parts of their language learning journey. This visit reflected something essential to ICLS: language learning thrives when curiosity, connection, and purpose meet.

This spirit of exploration mirrors the story behind ICLS’s Online English Classes. For more than 50 years, ICLS has helped learners build authentic communication skills through student-centered teaching. As a woman-owned, independent language school in Washington, D.C., our mission has remained consistent: to help students develop real-world language skills that support both personal and professional goals. Over time, one need became increasingly clear—many adults living and working in the United States required high-quality American English instruction that was flexible, accessible, and effective. National research affirms this need, “English language skills are foundational for adults navigating work, education, and daily life in the United States.”

Inside Planet Word’s galleries—where exhibits reveal how language works, where words originate, and how communication connects cultures—our students experienced English as identity, expression, and opportunity. We know that strong language learning happens when students feel supported, engaged, and connected to both their teachers and their community. Building that experience online required intention and expertise. Instead of transferring in-person lessons to a virtual classroom, ICLS designed its Online English Classes from the ground up.

Small groups of students ensure that every learner speaks from day one. Courses meet for one hour and 40 minutes, twice per week for ten weeks—creating a structured, steady path forward. With this format, students can progress from beginner to intermediate within one year for less than $12 per hour. All classes are taught by highly trained instructors with native-level proficiency who specialize in supporting adult English learners. English learning can feel overwhelming, but in the right environment—with expert guidance and meaningful practice—it becomes achievable. That belief led to the expansion of our Online English Group Classes across all levels, from Beginner I through Advanced Contemporary Topics.

Today, our online students enjoy an immersive experience through interactive activities, realistic speaking tasks, and lessons designed for practical communication. A sense of belonging and empowerment is central to our approach. It is also reflected in what our students share about their experience at ICLS:

QUOTES“It changed my life.” — Beginner Student

“The best English teacher I’ve ever had.” — Intermediate Student

“They make you feel like family.” — Advanced Student

When learners gain confidence in English, they gain more than vocabulary—they gain access. Access to better jobs, stronger relationships, clearer communication, and fuller participation in the communities where they live and work. Language learning “strengthens cultural understanding and social inclusion,” (UNESCO) especially for adults already living and working in the United States.

ICLS’s Online English Classes are designed with this purpose in mind. Whether students are preparing for a workplace conversation, improving everyday speaking skills, or building long-term confidence, they receive the support, structure, and community needed to succeed.
