English Skills Assessment

Applicants to all English as a Second Language programs undergo proficiency testing in order to ensure that they receive the best placement possible. Applicants’ overall speaking proficiency, listening comprehension, writing ability are all assessed before being placed.

Language proficiency testing is completed in two steps. First, the online placement test measures the applicant’s knowledge of the grammar structures as they align with the levels of the program, along with their writing ability. Following the online test, applicants participate in an Oral Proficiency Interview which can be in-person, via phone or via Skype, and lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

The information from both tests is then analyzed and compared by the ESL Director and/or ESL Coordinator in order to ensure placement in the proper level or program.
