Building Community Through Conversation: The ICLS English Club

Written by Orietta Estrada | December 24, 2025

For more than 50 years, the International Center for Language Studies (ICLS) has welcomed English learners from across the DMV and around the world into a community shaped by curiosity, connection, and intentional communication. Over time, one need consistently surfaced: many learners wanted a welcoming space to practice English in a natural, supportive environment. That need became the spark behind our Wednesday Conversation Club.

The Need for a Safe Space to Speak English

Many adult English learners want more opportunities to speak, AND finding safe, encouraging spaces to do so can be difficult. Outside the classroom, practicing English can feel intimidating and isolating—especially for newcomers, professionals building language skills for work, or adults seeking confidence in daily interactions.

Research shows, adult-education ESL remains an affordable, accessible path to improved skills and better opportunities (Institute of Education Sciences). To meet that need, we built a space where learners can gather weekly, speak freely, and grow together—whether they are enrolled in our online English classes or our in-person English programs in Washington, D.C., or on vacation and looking to connect with other learners!

Recent news has highlighted changes in how English learner support is structured across educational settings in the United States. As approaches continue to evolve, many learners benefit from additional opportunities to practice English in informal, community-based environments. Conversation-focused programs offer a valuable complement to classroom learning, giving adults space to use English regularly, build confidence, and stay engaged in their language development (The Washington Post).

Club Details & Weekly Topics

Every Wednesday from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m., ICLS opens its doors to a relaxed, low-pressure conversation club. Students from different programs and proficiency levels come together with one shared goal: practice English in real dialogue.

Topics rotate each week. Recent ones included:

  • Time travel ideas
  • Favorite books
  • Cultural traditions around Thanksgiving
  • Life dreams

These themes invite participants to share, listen, explore vocabulary, and express ideas in English at their own pace. For students taking online group classes, the club offers an extra chance to build confidence in a welcoming in-person setting. For students in the DMV attending classes on campus, it enriches their weekly routine with meaningful conversation.

A Memorable August 2025 Session

One of our most memorable gatherings happened when visitors from the Japan Global Initiative joined the club. The room buzzed with different accents, stories, and laughter. Students sat side by side, sharing experiences in English under the guidance of teacher Ethan Jock. That session captured the heart of what we envisioned: community, connection, and experiential learning.

The Social Side of Language Learning

Language is more than grammar—it’s communication, trust, and participation in everyday life. For adults building English skills in the United States, opportunities to speak regularly are essential.

Conversation Club gives students a chance to speak naturally, make mistakes, learn spontaneously, and connect with others beyond structured classroom lessons. For many, this regular practice builds the confidence needed to use English at work, in school, or throughout daily life in the DMV.

Who Can Join the Club?

Whether you’re just starting your English journey or refining your fluency, the Conversation Club is open to all ICLS English students—online or in person. Bring curiosity, openness, and maybe a story connected to the week’s topic. We meet every Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. at our downtown Washington, D.C. campus.

This club isn’t just an extra activity—it’s part of how we build a community of learners. At ICLS, conversation becomes connection, AND learning becomes belonging.
