Student Learning Outcomes, Online Brazilian Portuguese Group Classes

Below is a course description for each level of ICLS’ Brazilian Portuguese Group Classes.
Beginner I

Designed for students with no prior knowledge of Portuguese, the Beginner I course teaches how to communicate in simple everyday situations. While the emphasis of the course is on developing speaking proficiency, it also introduces basic grammar concepts and teaches beginning reading skills. Upon completion of the course students will be able to participate in simple daily interactions. Students will also be able to understand basic information intended for tourists.

PrerequisiteNone

Beginner II

Designed for students with some prior knowledge of Portuguese, this course builds on the topics and communication skills taught in Beginner I. While the emphasis of the course is on developing speaking proficiency, it continues to introduce basic grammar concepts and teaches beginning reading skills. Upon completion of the course students will be able to participate in simple conversations while traveling, at work or during leisure time. Students will also be able to understand basic information intended for tourists.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Beginner I or equivalent proficiency.

Intermediate I

Designed for students with a basic knowledge of Portuguese, this course focuses on the development of fluency. Students will expand their ability to carry out simple conversations on a limited range of topics. Previous grammar concepts are reviewed and more complicated structures are introduced in context. Upon completion of the course students will be able to initiate and maintain predictable conversations and understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Beginner II or equivalent proficiency

Intermediate II

Designed for students with a solid knowledge of basic grammar concepts and the ability to conduct conversations on familiar topics including at the work place. Students will be introduced to the subjunctive mode and other more complex structures. Authentic materials will be used and will form the basis of classroom discussions.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Intermediate I or equivalent proficiency.

Conversational Portuguese for Spanish Speakers Beginner

This course is designed specifically for fluent speakers of Spanish with no prior knowledge of Portuguese. The emphasis will be on pronunciation and grammatical and semantic similarities and differences between Portuguese and Spanish. The pace is accelerated to allow students to progress to the Intermediate level upon completion of the course.

Prerequisite: Advanced proficiency in Spanish

Conversational Portuguese for Spanish Speakers Intermediate

This course is designed specifically for fluent speakers of Spanish. This class will expand students’ knowledge of basic grammar concepts and increase their ability to conduct conversations on familiar topics including at the workplace. Students will be introduced to more advanced verb tenses and complex structures. Authentic materials will be used and will form the basis of classroom discussions.

Prerequisite: Advanced proficiency in Spanish and/or completion of Spanish Speakers Beginner Portuguese.

Advanced Contemporary Topics for Brazilian Portuguese

Designed to focus on contemporary and colloquial usage of the language and to draw students’ attention to differences between the spoken and written language. Students with advanced proficiency will initiate and participate in discussions on topics related to current events and Brazilian culture. Grammar concepts are reviewed as needed in context.

Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish Speakers Intermediate Portuguese, Intermediate II, or equivalent Brazilian Portuguese speaking proficiency at the Intermediate High to Advanced Mid level.
