English as a Second Language (ESL)

ICLS provides English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for professionals and students in classes that are goal-oriented and individually-focused.

At ICLS, we focus on creating community through our friendly personal service, dedicated instructors, and excursions outside the classroom that promote cultural understanding and conversation. Our ESL students are people, not numbers.

ESL instructors use the Induced Discourse method, which encourages constant oral practice in the classroom by engaging students in a continuous exchange with the teacher. This method helps students immerse themselves in English so they can speak and understand the language as a native speaker.

All ESL instructors have a bachelor’s degree and certification in teaching English as a Second Language. Most have post-graduate degrees in TESOL or a related field. All are experienced working with a diverse array of cultures, ages, and language levels. In addition, our ESL instructors have lived abroad and learned other languages, helping them anticipate and accommodate the needs of students in their classes.

Classes are held in our conveniently located school in the heart of Washington, DC, offer flexible scheduling, and are outcome-oriented to ensure the ESL goals of the students are met.

For 50 years ICLS has been committed to teaching student-centered and goal-oriented English classes, serving students from countries all across the globe. ICLS’ Intensive English Program (IEP) is proud to have welcomed students from five continents and over 45 different countries.

The Intensive English Program (IEP), Communicating in Business English, and TOEFL Preparation Course are offered on a regular basis, and customized groups, private and semi-private classes are available upon request.
